— The family of a woman who died recently of COVID-19 wrote in her obituary that they blame the unvaccinated.

Candace Ayers tested positive for COVID-19 on July 28. After a rough battle with the virus in and out of the hospital, she died on Sept. 3, less than two months after learning she contracted it.

Her family is still processing their loss.

"I'm extremely angry," said her son, Marc Ayers. "I'm depressed. I'm still sad over it. I'm shocked that it even occurred."

Marc Ayers and the rest of the family is calling out those who are unvaccinated in Candance's obituary, which states, "She was vaccinated but was infected by others who chose not to be. The cost was her life."

"What we're trying to do with that statement is let it be known there are a few things that can be done to prevent what happened to our family," Marc said. "I think getting the vaccine for one is the most important thing that can be done."

The Sangamon County Public Health Department reports just five people have died of COVID-19 after getting vaccinated. One of the county's COVID-19 advisors says it's rare to die of the virus once you're protected.

"It's extremely low," said Dr. Donald Graham. "It's so low that it's hard to give a percentage. It would be less than one percent."

Graham added the highly contagious virus can be spread by anyone, despite their vaccination status.

"I will say though you are much more likely to spread it if you have not had the vaccine, but you can spread it if you've had the vaccine," he said.
