Community Foundation Boulder County has opened a $100,000 grant pool for those looking to host community-centric events to facilitate healing from the March 22 mass shooting at the Table Mesa King Soopers.

The announcement comes about six weeks after a group called StandUpBolder formed to demand the appointment of a special master to help distribute public donations for victims to a centralized account, arguing that the nonprofit groups handling the funds are not being transparent about donations provided to victims, the Associated Press reported.

When it comes to providing funding for community healing events, there’s been no guidebook, Lisa Moreno, vice president of programs at Community Foundation, said.

“This is the advisory committee breaking trail to allow south Boulder residents to decide what they need,” Moreno said.

The request for proposals opened July 15, and events of all sorts are being considered.

“It could be just about anything as long as it’s designed to meet this particular need,” Moreno said.

The $100,000 will be distributed on a rolling basis, either through Dec. 30 or until the money runs out. It’s not limited to nonprofits and established organizations, Moreno noted. Those who are not involved with a nonprofit can partner with the Boulder County Arts Alliance for fiscal sponsorship.

“The Boulder community continues to come together in moving ways, to rebuild a sense of security and community in the wake of this event,” Community Foundation CEO Tatiana Hernandez stated in a news release. “We hope this funding will inspire and support grassroots ideas that reinforce that we are Boulder Strong.”

The Colorado Healing Fund and Community Foundation Boulder County are among the organizations identified by StandUpBolder as those that should provide an audit for the funds collected in the wake of the shooting.

According to the news release from Community Foundation, more than 11,000 people donated $1.6 million to the Crisis Fund, opened by the foundation in the wake of the shooting, and $500,000 of that has been paid directly to the families of the 10 people who died at King Soopers.

The foundation says it will distribute the remainder “with transparency and accountability to the community.” In doing so, Community Foundation will work with the appointed advisory committee that’s meant to provide guidance on the use of funds. Its membership includes KC Becker, Violeta Chapin, Dana Derichsweiler, Nancy Feldman, Richard Garcia, Betsy Hall, Annett James, Bob Lawhead, Pedro Silva, Marc Soloway and Gwyneth Whalen.

Aside from that, Moreno said no changes have been made in response to the complaints.

“We’ve been pretty clear about how we would use this money from the very beginning,” Moreno said.

Since the inception of the Crisis Fund, Community Foundation provided a graphic dictating the three circles where money would be donated: the largest portion was to go to the victims and their families with the following portions allocated to those directly affected and the Boulder community at large. Any money donated after May 31 will go toward the broader community.

There are a number of stipulations for those applying for the $100,000 grant pool. The events proposed must be free, publicly accessible and focused on meeting the needs of the south Boulder community after the shooting. Organizers must consult with the Boulder Strong Resource Center or other trauma experts or victim advocates while planning the event.

Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley, 51; Denny Stong, 20; Neven Stanisic, 23; Rikki Olds, 25; Tralona Bartkowiak, 49; Teri Leiker, 51; Suzanne Fountain, 59; Kevin Mahoney, 61; Lynn Murray, 62; and Jody Waters, 65, were killed in the shooting.
