Cancer is always worth writing about.

Cancer has rightfully so, for many years, been considered a killer. Cancer is often unpredictable. It is different for each patient in response to diagnosis and treatment.

People with cancer have a diagnosis and diagnosis means thorough knowledge, and with that knowledge there is hope. We have antibiotics, vaccines, and surgical implants for every part of our bodies.

In spite of this we have not found a cure for cancer. What we do have is continued research and hope. The result is this is that there is a vast potential in the area of human health that is unknown.

Why does someone get cancer while someone else doesn’t? Physicians know what a diseased lung or pancreas looks and what the best medication is for patient management, but one cancer patient may lose the battle while another does not.

Perhaps the answer is a matter of genetics. Perhaps it is more than that. Healing is a total process involving the body, mind and spirit. We all have known or heard of someone who was cured of cancer by the will to live and faith with near miraculous regression of malignant lesions.

The effect of laughter ,happiness, optimism and joy on healing is a complex of everything that is good. Laughter stimulates the relaxation response, and removes anxiety which is a fundamental part of healing.

The joy of life and the desire to live is a catalyst to healing. My friend Lois was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. She is a survivor!

A woman, a nurse and psychotherapist who understood emotions and healing and ran 5 times a week, she wondered after her diagnosis of cancer and subsequent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation what needed healing?

What she found through her spiritual journey is that she had to face her fear and she had to let go of her anger, her insecurities, her feelings of not being or doing enough. All of those things that nobody could see, not even herself, were blocking her from living life to the fullest. Cancer showed her the path.

Most people are not living their life in the present. If you do your best today, your future will be taken care of. Negative situations are difficult for all of us but it is how we perceive a negative situation that has a powerful effect on our bodies.

We search for balance in our lives. When we are off balance in our intellect ( mind), body (physical) and spirit ( core essence ), we as human beings are off.

According to studies, secretion of brain hormones called Enkephalins , which promote healing, are triggered when a patient purports to believe in mind power and the power of prayer. With that said, can a person cause their own cancer by the negativity of perception of the events in their lives? Maybe not, but perhaps their immune system could be compromised. I do believe that our perceptions and thoughts have a powerful effect on our bodies.

In dealing with cancer, I believe in self-healing. The way that we visualize ourselves and our illness is very important to the healing process and can help cancer patients move towards optimal health.

The mind is a powerful tool and is able to affect our neurochemistry. This, in turn, affects our immune system and leads us toward health and wellness or towards pain and illness. It is important to focus on the patient as a whole, the mind, body and the spirit.

The mind is capable of modifying anxiety and pain. Imagery is a powerful tool and is effective in the treatment of cancer patients. Albert Einstein stated, “imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Cancer is a threat to life and spirit. The stages and types of cancer much too often determine psychiatric distress and additionally, medications and chemotherapy agents can influence and effect mood. Also, some hormonal treatments can have a negative effect on sexual desires and feelings.

Cancer causes fatigue, your friend may have trouble sleeping, or when she does sleep, she may have trouble staying asleep. Many thoughts may be dancing through her mind. How is the impact of cancer going to affect her family, and her family’s future.

A patient’s faith is also a very important part of healing. Healing occurs, in part, from a spiritual source within. People get well according to their belief systems. My job as a therapist is to help patients move towards healing by removing negative thoughts and suggestions.

“As a man thinketh, so is he.” Belief affects biology.  These techniques are not replacements for medical treatment, but an adjunct to them.

To those cancer patients who create their own peace of mind, live life to its fullest and give birth to the best within them, cancer is an agent of change.
