Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the country’s top infection disease experts, recently said the United States is still in its first wave of COVID-19 cases, which means the country should rethink how it handles what’s to come.
- “Rather than say, ‘A second wave,’ why don’t we say, ‘Are we prepared for the challenge of the fall and the winter?’” Fauci said, according to CNN.
- “If we listen to the public health measures, not only would we diminish the effect of COVID-19, we might get away with a very, very light flu season if we combine that with getting the flu vaccine,” Fauci said.
The fall and winter will feature schools reopening, which could lead to increased cases. More people will gather inside because of the cold temperatures, too, which could lead to spread, CNN reports.
Has the second wave already started?
Mathematicians Nick James and Max Menzies said in a new published paper that the second wave of coronavirus cases might have already started.
The scientists used a new method to review COVID-19 case numbers. They reportedly saw evidence of the first and second waves already happening.
